VISIONARY LACE ENVIRONMENTS IN BG WINDOWS FOR FASHION WEEK For our Fifth Avenue windows during New York Fashion Week, Bergdorf Goodman commissioned a site-specific installation by Vienna-based artist Eva Petric. The installation, entitled “Personal UNiVERSEs,” consists of assemblages of thousands of small, individual lace pieces. These vintage pieces, acquired by the artist from many sources over a period of years, have been combined to create large weblike environments.
According to Petric: “The assemblages are made out of old, given, or purchased pieces of lace and hand works. Some I got from family and friends, and many were bought from flea markets around the world. Some were given to me by people who pulled them from storage–even out of cellars. So these pieces really represent for me the trans generational connections that tie us into worldwide webs.”
The work is a development of Petric’s Hematoma series, which was first inspired by self-taken images of the artist’s skin in all its variations. Later this was extended to encompass imagery from the “expo” level: NASA photographs of stellar and outer-space formations. Finally, the artist was interested in incorporating a third element: the “nano” (cellular) level of human anatomy.
Says the artist: “I became interested in looking at our skin as being the membrane separating the nano-cellular universe from the stellar star expo universe. This led to my wish to make an artistic intervention in the place where our skin is of uttermost importance, being the canvas upon which we place our clothes. Bergdorf Goodman seemed the best place for this. I have introduced the idea that our skin is a reflection of the cosmos above, a canvas for unique universes…., making us thus timeless and without borders, questioning where does “I” end and where does “you” begin and where does “I” begin and where does “You” end?” Petric’s lace networks serve as an environment for a series of mannequins dressed in looks selected from Bergdorf Goodman’s Spring collections.
