Safe Sun Review: Serge Normant

5 23 2012

May is Melanoma Awareness month and we’re really proud to partner with the Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA) to support Melanoma research. All month long we’re supporting the MRA through a host of exciting initiatives in-store, on our blog, and through social platforms like TwitterFacebook, and Pinterest.

Today, our Social Media Coordinator learns how to protect her hair from the sun’s rays & renowned Stylist Serge Normant adds to the conversation. . .

It was one of those (err, few) recent warm days in the City, where I spent a beautiful afternoon catching up with friends on a rooftop downtown.  I had practiced my safe sun skills that day: had applied my shot-glass full of sunscreen and reapplied more throughout the day, was wearing my favorite sunnies, and kept my shoulders covered. See, I had my bases covered — or so I thought. It wasn’t until the next morning that I remembered the one thing that I forget to protect – my hair.

Serge Normant Meta Luxe Hairspray UV Protection

Sun’s damaging rays can rob hair of color, strength and glossiness. To prevent this, I now incorporate a UV-blocking product from one of our newest brands. . . Serge Normant Meta Luxe Hairspray UV protection (212 872 2621) is formulated with natural extracts of Atlas Cedar Extract, Pro Vitamin B5, Chamoline, and Rosemary to help shield hair from harmful elements. I like that I’m able to reapply Meta Luxe Hairspray over the course of the day, and add some oomph & protection, without creating heavy build up. Now that I’ve added this to my hair routine and picked up the travel-sized version to add to my Memorial Day Essentials, I’m all set for the super sunny days ahead!

Lucky us — we recently had the opportunity to sit down with Serge Normant, the man behind the brand, and ask his advice on how to protect hair and scalp from the sun.

From Serge, to us, to you:

It’s imperative to remember to protect the scalp while outdoors. I always suggest applying SPF 30 at the part to ensure it doesn’t burn.  Naturally scooping your hair up in a scarf, bandana or wearing a hat will work to protect it, too.

Whilst the sun gives us sun-kissed locks, it is also very drying. Try combing through a deep conditioning mask or deep conditioner — this will help protect and nourish the hair and prevent further damage.  My own Meta Morphosis Deep Treatment includes an ingredient called ‘Keravis’, which is a strengthening and restorative ingredient that protects and improves the condition of hair. Simply comb through the hair and rinse at the end of your beach day & your hair will feel super soft and manageable [Editor's Note: Hmm...clearly a product review is in order...soon!]. Also, a good hair oil or dry oil can be used to protect the hair.

- Thank you, Serge!
