NYFW Behind-the-Scenes: 3.1 Phillip Lim
Photographer Zak Bush goes backstage with a few of our favorite 5F names
It was perhaps ten minutes before the 3.1 Phillip Lim show was supposed to begin. Some models tucked themselves into a corner, nose in book; while others patiently held collapsable light reflectors as photographers snapped their beauty shots. Like most fashion week backstage scenes, the mood was calm, quiet.
And then Hanne Gaby Odiele arrived. Fresh from walking the Donna Karan Fall 2013 show, she entered with gusto, commanding the room’s attention. Within seconds a flurry of makeup artists and hair stylists surrounded the 5’10″ Belgian model, unclipping her swinging ponytail extensions and adding a touch of lip color. A pair of round acrylic sunglasses quickly hid Hanne’s leftover heavy eye makeup, a fitting styling improvisation for a show whose motto was sonomama.
Meaning as you are in Japanese, sonomama was the thread running through Phillip Lim’s eclectic moto-chick inspired Fall Collection. These were the girls who look casual, cool…. but aren’t afraid to be a little bad. They’re effortlessly styled without looking over-polished, crafty without being kitsch. Loosely inspired by cafe racer culture, Phillip Lim presented a mix of layered looks celebrating the tough girl in us all. There were moto-jackets; textured, over-sized sweaters, patchwork jumpsuits (stitched in just before the show began) and short leather skirts to pair with over-the-knee boots… just the sort of thing you’d want to wear on a brisk, Fall day.
