NYFW Autumn/ Winter Beauty Notes

Lancome for Jason Wu

1 of 1

Jason Wu

THE LOOK

Hello, moody blues. Deep, stormy indigo eyes rule.

EDITOR’S NOTES

I always love a navy rimmed eye. It’s a chic alternative to black. Test the waters with a soft smudge to the lower lash line. Feeling adventurous? Rim upper and lower lash line, then apply mascara for emphasis. Divine! Try: Lancome Le Crayon Black Lapis

Helmut Lang

Helmut Lang

THE LOOK

For Helmut Lang, NARS created creamy skin, bold brows, and muted lips. Overall, the look is quietly impactful.

EDITOR’S NOTES

Usually, runway makeup is an over-the-top display of color and texture. And from there, we interpret the key trend and translate the look for real life. The look for Helmut Lang feels highly relatable and easily replicated. Try a mix of brow powder (for density) and brow grooming brush (for shape) to achieve this modern look.

Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang

THE LOOK

For Alexander Wang, NARS used soft gradations of matte grey and brown on lids. Brows are full and brushed upwards. Cheeks are sculpted and lips are natural.

EDITOR’S NOTES

The big takeaway here is softly contoured eyes. The use of matte gives shape without adding too much impact. The lack of shimmer leads to an understated feel. Try this look when going for the the “no makeup” effect.

Tibi

Tibi

THE LOOK

An understated pale lip and unstructured smokey eye.

EDITOR’S NOTES

The smokiness is focused closer to the lower eye…this feels new and fresh. Not severely structured and contoured, the look is easily replicated for everyday wear. Play it safe with neutral tones of beige, pale gold, taupe, and chocolate. Try Bobbi Brown eye shadows in Bone, Taupe, Mahogany and Espresso.

Pamella Roland

Pamella Roland

THE LOOK

Balanced yet bold. Muted skin, with pronounced brows and impactful lips.

EDITOR’S NOTES

We’re wild for the lips and brows by Laura Mercier at Pamella Roland. To pull off the look, without feeling over-the-top, keep lids neutral and go easy on the liner.

Misha Nonoo

Misha Nonoo

THE LOOK

Everything is matte. From the rich rouge shade on lips, to the layers of chocolate, ivory and cocoa on eyes, this look is void of sheen. Skin is softly buffed with no trace of glow, but still feels fresh and romantic.

EDITOR’S NOTES

The secret to mastering the wine-stained lip is to apply, blot, and then apply a generous coating to the center of lips only…this enhances the stained feel. Try Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color in Burnt Red and Crimson.

2012-AW-September-Naeem Khan

1 of 1

Naeem Khan

THE LOOK

For Naeem Khan, NARS created statement-making brows. The contrast of natural, bright skin against dark, sculpted brows , which were further enhanced by  brows are the primary focus, while skin is left natural and bright.

EDITOR’S NOTES

Great brows are always in. Go full and lush for a youthful feel. Here’s how we get the look!

Wes Gordon

Wes Gordon

THE LOOK

For Wes Gordon, Essie layered deep chocolate and rich wine shades to create high drama.

EDITOR’S NOTES

This look is classic and works on a variety of skin tones. The key to flawless execution is to keep nails short and sweet. Too long, and the look goes goth.

La Perla

La Perla

THE LOOK

Skin is fresh and elegant. Soft highlight and subtle contour frame the face. Lips are red and lush.

EDITOR’S NOTES

As much as I enjoy aspirational beauty, achievable, wearable looks hold a special place in my heart. This look centers on beautifully perfected skin. Get The Look: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders (212 872 8842)

Rodarte

1 of 1

Rodarte

THE LOOK

Intentionally messy, the look is designed to feel lived in and perfectly imperfect.

EDITOR’S NOTES

Smudges and slight smears don’t make us the least bit uneasy. But there’s a fine line between carefree beauty and beauty that’s completely undone. Maintain balance: We suggest blot papers or loose powder to keep the complexion fresh and shine free.

Michael Kors

1 of 1

Michael Kors

THE LOOK

Sharp, graphic lines. Eyes are color-blocked in shades of violet and black. Lips are a pale flush of pink.

EDITOR’S NOTES

Intensely dramatic eyes are always a fun, bold statement to see on the runway. Balance is the key to translating this look for everyday wear. Partner darkly rimmed eyes with low key lips. Try: Shiseido Perfect Rouge in Fantasia.

Donna Karan

1 of 1

Donna Karan

THE LOOK

For Donna Karan, MAC created steely grey, metal eyes — a bit of a beautiful mess. Brows are combed upwards and groomed into place. Lips are pale, with barely a flush of pinky-nude.

EDITOR’S NOTES

The look easily translates for evening…stormy, metallic lids and soft, sheer lips are classic. To make the look more wearable, amp the lip color with a slight slick of gloss. This adds dimension and keeps the pale pink shade from appearing too flat.

Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera

THE LOOK

Super fresh skin, slightly flushed cheeks, and softly stained lips.

EDITOR’S NOTES

Achieve this look with just one easy-to-use product — a lip and cheek multi-tasker. We like AERIN Beauty Lip & Cheek Color (212 872 2777) and Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge (212 872 2681).

Marc Jacobs

1 of 1

Marc Jacobs

THE LOOK

For Marc Jacobs, NARS created matte skin, with no visible cheek color. The eye has a punk feel…it’s dark, smokey and well defined.

EDITOR’S NOTES

For a less punk, and more modern feel, give the liner a good smudge with your fingertip or a cotton swab. This makes the look slightly less intentional and more youthful.
