JASON WU Orchid Rain (212 872 2695) goes a step further — the elegant, porcelain candle with slight whimsical feel, adds a certain je ne sais quoi to home decor. We sit down with Jason Wu to discuss Orchid Rain & his entrée into home fragrance.

Orchid Rain is a surprising blend of floral & citrus. . . what led to this composition?

Jason Wu: For my first scent, I wanted to incorporate many of the things that inspire my own RTW collections. The composition of pear and orchid was quite beautiful but made less sweet and conventional through the addition of leather and birch wood — I love that the candle is classic and new all at once.

Besides your own candle, which NEST scents do you like?

JW: I think Bamboo always brings a sense of tranquillity to my studio when I am working on new collections.

Have you always been drawn to home fragrance?

JW: I have always thought that fashion incorporates all the senses, so naturally I’ve always been drawn to new and exciting scents. I started buying NEST candles many years ago after a friend gave me one for Christmas — I was hooked! When Laura Slatkin (of NEST) heard about this, we met up for coffee, and the rest was history…!

If you were to create a second candle, which notes would you incorporate?…what mood would you evoke?

JW: Something mysterious and sensual — like the mood of my Fall 2012 collection.

How do you incorporate candles into your home decor & workspace?

JW: I think candles are so great at creating an inviting ambiance — I designed the vessel of Orchid Rain to incorporate my signature print from Spring 2012, so that it also serves as a beautiful object for the home.

Tell us about the design elements of your candle?….it’s quite delicate and soft, yet appears to work in both feminine and masculine spaces.

JW: I wanted the design elements of the candle to hit all the same notes as my RTW collection — it had to be feminine, but strong at the same time.
