DIY At-Home Facial
We Show You How
Maintaining glowy, flawless skin is a must. And while a monthly facial at a fancy spa is a nice treat, busy beauty girls on-the-go don’t always have the time. So why not create your own personal oasis at home? Here’s how:
Set The Mood
Think relaxation. Choose a day of the week that feels serene. We love at-home facials on a lazy Sunday afternoon…usually post brunch with friends.
Choose a calm setting, complete with dim lighting and your favorite aromatherapy candle. We like the juicy, citrus notes of NEST Sicilian Tangerine (212 872 2695). The ripe fragrance is a mood-enhancing blend of Sicilian tangerine, bergamot, passion fruit, and exotic mango, artfully blended over a warm base of musk and praline.
Personalize Your Facial Experience
Most day spas offer a signature facial. With a little customization, you too can craft a facial treatment to suit your skin’s specific needs.
A basic facial includes the following steps: cleanse, exfoliate, steam, extract, treat, moisturize and protect. When in doubt, start basic and gentle. Here’s how:
Step 1: Cleanse
Proper cleansing is an imperative first step. If you are wearing makeup, choose a cleanser that removes makeup and provides a deep clean. Kate Somerville Gentle Face Wash (212 872 8824) is a great choice because it is formulated to remove makeup and pore-clogging surface debris without over-drying the skin.
Step 2: Exfoliate
Manual exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells. The at-home exfoliation process should be extremely gentle. For sensitive or acne prone skin, try Guerlain Polishing Exfoliator (212-872-2734). It’s effective without being abrasive. For normal skin, use Kiehl’s Since 1851 Epidermal Re-Texturizing Micro-Dermabrasion (212 872 2764). Apply exfoliant in gentle circular motions, making sure to not over do it. Use very light pressure and allow the exfoliant to do all the work.
Step 3: Steam
Applying steam to the face helps to unclog pores and aid in the easy removal of impurities. While most spas use a facial steaming device, you can easily replicate the experience at home by placing a warm towel on your face for ten minutes. Or, try a bowl filled with hot water… as you carefully hang your head over the bowl, allow the steam to rise. Do this for about 10 minutes.
Step 4: Extractions
Instead of traditional extractions, our DIY method calls for the gentle lifting of blackheads and whiteheads with a peel off mask. We’re hopelessly addicted to Sulwhasoo Skin Clarifying Mask (212 872 8726). How do we say this tastefully?…It gets the gunk out!
Step 5: Treatment Masque or Peel
Further enhance skin with a treatment masque or peel that delivers the end result you desire. A mask like Shiseido White Lucent Power Brightening Mask (212 872 2541) is great for evening the skin tone and addressing hyperpigmentation. A clay based mask like Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask (212 872 8619) is optimal for oily or acne prone skin. If texture is a concern, go with a glycolic acid based peel like La Prairie Cellular Resurfacing 3-Minute Peel (212 872 2623) or an enzyme based peel such as Tata Harper Resurfacing Masque (212 872 8857).
Step 5: Tone
Balance, refine and restore the skin with an alcohol free toner like Amore Pacific Time Response Renewal Toner (212 872 2770). Apply with a cotton swab or mist onto skin for a real treat.
Step 6: Treat/ Moisturize/ Protect
This final step can be customized if you’re staying indoors or heading out for the day. Either way, massage a lightweight serum into skin and a soothing eye cream around your eyes. Beauty by Clinica Ivo Pitanguy Vital Elixir (212 872 8785) is a great choice because it provides skin with a boost of hydration and is packed with anti-aging ingredients. To refresh tired eyes, go with Sisley Supremya Eye (212 872 2563). It’s formulated to regenerate the sensitive eye area and correct signs of environmental stress.
Follow facial serum with a soothing moisturizer. Kate Somerville Age Arrest Advance Reviving Cream (212 872 8824) significantly increases skin’s moiture level while improving firmness and elasticity. If going outdoors, use a a moisturizer with SPF like Natura Bisse Diamond White Oil Free Brilliant Protection SPF 50 PA+++ (212 872 2693).
So there you have it. In as little as six easy steps, you can enjoy spa quality results right at home.
