Designer Focus: Donna Karan Evening
Today we are thrilled to introduce you to the Donna Karan Atelier Collection.
Who better to debut this collection of red-carpet-worthy gowns than the bustling and busy DKNY PR GIRL?
@bergdorfs uses the word grand a lot. Maybe she’s describing an outfit or even a “grand” time she’s had, but I kind of chuckle when I read it because it strikes me as so classic, almost old-fashioned. Grand is a white glove kind of word. It belongs on the red carpet at the Oscars, rubbing elbows with words like divine and triumphant.
There are limited occasions in life where one can dress as the word grand, but as a pr girl I witness them all the time for my job. Celebrity dressing has become (over the years) the name of the game- the be all end all for a brand. Dressing an A-lister at an award show is on the level of getting a cover of Vogue. Some might even say more important. For me, I’ll take both thank you very much. But what goes into getting this done is simply tortuous. It’s about relationships and of course THE DRESS. But you are up against EVERYONE and when I say everyone I mean racks of other designers. Not to mention with their manager, publicist, hair dresser, makeup artist, boyfriend, best friend and housekeeper weighing in, it’s practically a miracle anyone dresses anyone.
So why am I telling you this? Well, we started this celebrity dressing atelier this year. Yay!!
It’s been an exciting evolution to witness Donna Karan, a brand typically known for jersey dresses (albeit beautifully draped), taking gowns to the next level and then the level after that. I had the pleasure of donning one of these high evening confections to the Frick Young Fellows Ball recently. A red, multi-layer scalloped gown with a massive train. It was divine. No…it was GRAND. So many girls stopped me at the party to compliment my dress (sorry boys but they matter more than you) and the best part was the shock and awe they showed on their faces when I told them who the designer was. “Donna Karan? Really? I didn’t know she made gowns like that!”, said many a patron that evening. Isn’t it amazing that we continue to learn something new every day? That night I felt what it must be like to walk the Oscars red carpet, only it was Madison Avenue with my feet stinging from the pain of dancing the night away. Regardless, getting photographed by legendary photographers reminds you that we can all be celebrities when we want to. It’s just about choosing the right look for that special scene in your life. So when they say ACTION! you’re ready to play the role in grand fashion…
