Day-in-the-Life of AGL

Getting to know the Giusti Sisters

Breakfast at Vera's

The Secret to our Relationship

Sara, Marianna and I live in Montegranaro, in three country homes that are about 5 kilometers (approximately 3 miles) from one another.  And 5 kilometers more from the AGL factory.

When none of us is traveling for work, we eat breakfast together… usually at my house, in my garden.  We start the day with whole wheat croissants filled with mixed berry jam, cappuccino and fresh fruit — apricots, peaches, apples and figs, picked strictly from my garden.  Clearly we always end up talking about work… we read and comment on the press reviews, things like that.

The relaxing atmosphere we enjoy at the beginning of the day is the secret to our relationships of honest complicity and to the engine of our creativity. Our most creative ideas usually come to us at breakfast. Once breakfast is over, so too is the relaxing part of our day, and we embark upon our daily hustle and bustle.

In the Office

Sisterly Teamwork

Once in the office a good portion of our time is dedicated to executing our creative ideas; that is, the translation of ideas into product.

Marianna is the designer of the AGL collections. Generally she designs on paper or on a mold while Sara and I select the leathers and accessories, choose the color palette and create all the color combinations for the respective models. This part of our work is another decidedly creative part and it comes to us as a reflection of our travels, of what strikes us from reading books, meeting new people, looking at the feet of people walking through airports, leafing through newspapers… in fact, this is the only way I can explain why we choose one color rather than another, a combination or a certain line in the shoe design.

All the little details

The creative work, however, does not have to be closed in the office; it’s also nice to bring it out in the field.

In the factory we decide which wax or polish to use to finish the leather, which color thread to add, how to brush a shoe… and we also do a quick quality control on the finished product.

Lunch Break

Light & Fresh

After our creative efforts, we take quick break for a light, fresh lunch. Tomatoes, salad and zucchini accompany skewers of shrimp and pineapple for Sara; shrimp cocktail garnished with parsley and chives is for Marianna; and a salad of tuna, romano beans and black olives is my favorite dish.

The place dearest to us is a discreet seaside chalet 5-minutes from the office. Even though we make a point of disconnecting and not thinking about work, we always end up replying to email!

Afternoon Appointments

Sine qua non of Italian handcrafted shoes

We always hurry back to work after lunch because we devote the afternoon to appointments.

Meeting the leather suppliers is our favorite part because the leather is the sine qua non of Italian handcrafted shoes. Together with the Tuscan tanners, we create our raw materials, selecting the type of tanning, the color, the finish, the thickness and the footage of the leather with which all AGL footwear will be made.

At the end of the day

The next AGL Generation!

After an intense day of work at the company, in the evening we like to take a little time for ourselves… get dressed up and go out to dinner, Sara and I with our “men” and Marianna with her little princess, the sole female heir to the throne of the next AGL generation.

When it comes to designing AGL shoes, it’s a family affair — crossing three generations.

Founded in 1958 by designer Piero Giusti, AGL Shoes now finds its leadership within his granddaughter’s hands.  Handcrafted in Italy, AGL feels decidedly clean, modern, Him for Her.  And it’s no surprise that with Marianna, Vera and Sara intimately involved in the design and production process that AGL still adheres to their grandfather’s and father’s canon: create beautiful hand-made shoes that seamlessly blend craftsmanship and comfort.

Today middle sister Vera gives 5th/58th a peek into a typical day for the Giusti sisters — because their own lifestyles are the cornerstone and inspiration for each pair of AGL ballet flats, brogue and ankle boot.  To know the Giusti sisters is to know the heart of this special shoe collection now available on 5F.
