A Touch of Rue Cambon
Today Bergdorf Goodman is thrilled to announce our new CHANEL boutique.
Inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel’s legendary Paris apartment on rue Cambon, the space melds Chanel’s opulent details and craftsmanship with a sense of graciousness and modernity. Designed by noted architect and Chanel collaborator Peter Marino, our new boutique offers an environment that is uniquely Chanel: custom-created sofas covered in signature tweed, hand-woven custom leather stools are situated comfortably next to Chanel jewelry, and a French marble antique fireplace flanked by handmade coromandel screens recalls Mademoiselle Chanel’s apartment. Light spills through handmade curtains flecked with iconic Chanel pearls (a nod to the work of Chanel ateliers). Extending upon this touch, our fitting rooms boast couture curtain panels made of faux suede with a cut out pearl design, while other panels include a handmade gold moon pattern.
Did we mention the view? It overlooks Central Park.
Twice as large as our previous boutique, our new Chanel Boutique is the largest outside of Chanel’s own store. It also is the first to host the anticipated Paris-Byzance collection, first shown in Paris in December 2010. This special collection features the work of the Metiers — artisans that create signature Haute Couture details, including Desrues, the costume jeweler, Lemaire, the feather specialist, Lessage, the embroidere, Massaro, the shoemaker, Michel, the milliner, Goosens, the goldsmith and Guillet, the floral accessory specialist. It is deliciously opulent and well-researched. Revisiting the Byzantine inspiration that first captured Mademoiselle Chanel in 1920, Karl Lagerfeld presented iconic Chanel tweeds interwoven and braided in the signature Byzantine style with gold, satin leather, velvet, cashmere, chiffon, laces and tulle; costume jewelry adorned with square glass beads, enamel and filigree gilt metal; ballet flats tipped with gold filigree; and handbags adorned with Byzantine splendor — gold running through burnt out tweed, embedded precious stones and embellished braids. It is opulently seductive yet refreshingly modern — a perfect mix for a modern-day Ottoman Empress.
