5F Friday: Leather Essentials

Beyond the black moto jacket

Previous Next

If there’s a singular must-have this Fall, it has to be leather.  And, to be honest, leather has never looked so good.

Leather stepped beyond its usual periphery of black motorcycle jackets and silhouette-hugging pants this season, experimenting with the unexpected and introducing us to new closet essentials.  Whether faux or real, leather is the simplest way to add an element of edge to your every day look.  Here’s our list of leather essentials — pick one (or many).

Leather Tees
This is your basic starter piece because, quite frankly, it goes with everything.  Pair it with dark jeans, ankle boots and a clutch, and your kind-of-casual-but-really-cool Friday night look is complete.  Want to add modernist edge to your office look? Leather tees go swell with high-waisted trousers as well as pencil and circle skirts.

Colored Moto Jackets
We’re familiar with the black motorcycle jacket.  This season designers are giving the classic a colorful kick with bold hues.  Kelly Wearstler imagined it in apple green while our own private label stepped it up with fire-engine red.  Contrast with a white tee or try tonal colorblocks with bordeaux or emerald green.
Both in-store only, 212 872 8856.

The Dress Reconsidered
Here the leather shift is given a playful twist by converting classics into something delightfully unexpected.  New to 5F, Faith Connexion lengthened the moto jacket into a mini dress that works as a  stand-alone or layered up as a vest during the colder months.  No stranger to the material, Alexander Wang heeded duality by adding leather panels to their slack jersey dress.
Both in-store only, 212 872 8856.

Schoolgirl Kick
Alice + Olivia
designer Stacey Bendet gave the pleated schoolgirl skirt a downtown edge in slick navy or bordeaux.  Pair this mini with a crisp white shirt in October, then cozy up with a chunky gray sweater in November.  Knee socks optional.

Oversized, Studded… but Minimalist
Perfect for dressing up or down, Pierre Balmain’s studded tuxedo jacket went decidedly minimalist by limiting its embellishment to just the lapels.  Wear with cigarette pants, jeans or event a form-fitting dress, so that the bulk of attention remains on your jacket.
In-Store only, 212 872 8856.
