5F Friday: A Girl’s Guide to Neon

4 27 2012

Each Friday we seem to find ourselves browsing sunny 5F for the latest looks to complete our weekend look.  It only made sense to turn our regular tradition into a regular date on 5th/58th.

This week’s focus? Neon.

Neon is shining bright on 5F this Spring… and this Friday we’re thinking of ways to boost our own wardrobe for the weekend. And while neon typically brings to mind our Hypercolor ski suits of the early nineties, we’ve discovered that these brighter-than-bright hues are something that anyone can wear this decade.

A few words from 5F buyer, Patrice:

Patrice in Theyskens' TheoryOne of the most standout trends of the spring season is the neon craze.  Back in September, when we saw all of the spring collections, I knew this would be huge.  Don’t let the fluorescent hues intimidate you!!!  There are so many ways to introduce the trend into your wardrobe that will immediately update your style.

I personally love anything and everything back to leather and denim, and neons are no exception.   Start off easy with a pair of neon shorts with a denim shirt for the weekend, or throw in a leather vest back to our neon yellow Rag & Bone exclusive zipper jean for a little edge.  I also love mixing and matching these highlighter brights.  It’s no secret that I’m always in love with Rag & Bone, but they truly captured this aesthetic the best in their spring collection.  I’m addicted to the bright blazers and love all of them back to my neon yellow PS1 bag that has been my spring staple.

Another notable, Theyskens’ Theory.  Theyskens’ spring show was insanely good.  His clothes are such unique masterpieces.  I’m personally obsessed with the green jala felan embroidered jacket (above left).  This work of art consists of many different shaped sequins, some of which are actually hand-burned. There is a kaleidoscope of colors that reflect from the iridescent hand-cut foils.  There are at least 8-10 different sequins (opaque, transparent, and iridescent) and the background fabric is a luxurious black organza.  Its pricey, but worth every penny for such an ornate hand-made piece.  I wear it back to the gorgeous franky blouses that come in multiple colorways.  No matter how you embrace the trend, you are sure to look electrifying!

Basics:

b

Select one bright color and keep the rest of your look relatively neutral.
Pair electric jeans with a chambray shirt, a boldly-hued dress beneath an ivory jacket or dark skinnies paired with a tangerine blazer.

Next Steps:

b

Think colorblocks and tonal colorblocks.

Tone down color that may overwhelm with a denim jacket like Alicia — when you feel more comfortable you can slide that jacket on the back of your seat to reveal an absolutely stunning colorblocked combo.  Test tonal colorblocks like Nicolle did with by pairing a darker-colored blouse beneath a blazer in that color’s neon hue (in her case, navy & electric blue) — she took it one step further by accentuating Rag & Bone’s printed colors through her chartreuse PS1 Tote & Paige Novick neon tassel necklace.  Although there’s a lot going on, Nicolle’s look still feels tamer because the colors complement each other!

Neon only gets brighter (and, in Nicolle & Sheila’s case, smarter) when worn together.
Neutral-colored jackets mute the overall effect while also adding texture and edge.

Get into it!

b

Once you feel more comfortable with neon, start mixing things up!

Patrice accentuates the kaleidoscopic neon yellow tones in her hand-embroidered Theyskens’ Theory jacket (seriously: this jacket… so special.  Hand-cut iridescent foils and a range of opaque, transparent & iridescent sequins hand-embroidered onto black organza. It’s one of 5F’s most special pieces) with a neon yellow Theyskens’ Theory blouse and white jeans.  Sheila really plays it bold with a printed Gryphon skirt and A.Wang polo tank and accentuating her look dynamic pieces from Joomi Lim, Eddie Borgo and Diane von Furstenberg.
