Spotlight on: Margaret Zhang & Dion Lee

With Sydney Fashion Week in full force, we sat down with two of the coolest Aussies in fashion. A creative force in the digital world, Margaret Zhang is the talented photographer, stylist and mastermind behind Shine by Three. Dion Lee caught our eye 3 years ago for his sharp tailoring, clean lines, and cult following of cool girls. We caught up with both before Dion’s Resort 2017 show, where Margaret was taking the new collection for a spin:

BG: How did you two meet? Were you fashion friends first or real friends first?

DL: I can’t remember exactly where we first met but our first date was at a Thai restaurant in Paris. Margaret is a very inspiring friend and I feel lucky that we have been able to work on creative projects together and hang out around the world.

MZ: No doubt some kind of food was involved. I have so much respect for Dion in that he has remained so humble in his success, works exceptionally hard, sticks to his creative vision, and is a hugely generous and kind human being.

BG: Describe the Australian aesthetic. How do you find it to be unique compared to other global markets?

DL: There is an ease that runs through the collections of many Australian designers. The lifestyle in Australia definitely influences the way people dress.

MZ: Aussies have the high-low mix down pat. The unique beach culture and amazing light definitely influences designers’ use of color and fabrication.

BG: The show was presented with a stunning view of Sydney. How does it differ presenting your collection at home as opposed to New York City? Does it affect how you style? The event production?

DL: Showing in Sydney from my first show in an underground car park, to this years roof top space, I have always chosen venues that compliment the collection. There are some incredible spaces in this city and I have always connected with architectural environments.

BG: The most buzzed about look was the finale dress which we heard weighed 20 kilos (!) Who is your dream girl to wear the dress?

DL: Nicole Pollard, the model who wore it in the show was my dream girl last night. She accepted the challenge of the heaviest dress we have ever made and made it appear weightless. We are looking to recreate the technique in lightweight materials as it has had such a significant response.

MZ: Daria Werbowy in the amazon… on a canoe.

BG: Describe the Resort collection in 3 words:

DL: Light, glass, refraction

MZ: 1. Would 2. Wear 3. That

BG: Dion, what is one thing we wouldn’t know about Margaret from her instagram?

DL: She works extremely hard but makes it look easy!

BG: Margaret, how do you incorporate Dion Lee into your wardrobe? What piece from the Resort show are you most excited to wear?

MZ: I wear a lot of Dion’s outerwear, it is tailored to perfection. For resort I’m most excited to wear the closing glass dress to buy groceries in. But also the backless knit, whit corset belt and split-side wide leg pants.
