Yesterday, beloved BG designer Gilles Mendel presented his first ever J.Mendel couture collection in Paris. After decades of creating gowns for actresses and A-list women, Gilles felt the time was right to head home for an event of pure fashion fantasy.
But before the parade of high glamour at Couture week, we got a first look inside the New York City atelier. It was truly a fashion girl’s dream: room after room of gowns, furs, and beaded beauties in various states of creation. We swooned over sheer silk separates with a trail of buttons, figure hugging furs, and his signature pleated chiffon in different splashes of color and shimmering gold.
Staring in awe at the work in progress, Gilles explained the collection’s inspiration: growing up outside Paris, where he took long walks in the woods with his father. The forest inspired the natural color palette of rust, gold, and olive. The paths of french gardens came to life with intricate winding of beads on a column gown. The loveliest touch? Inside the coats’ lining was a beautifully beaded heart stitched with initials, as if carved in a tree: “Gilles + Jacques.” A nod to his father, with whom the legacy of great craftsmanship began.
