Come by the third floor on Thursday, April 16, from 1-5pm to meet Mary Katrantzou during her first appearance in New York and view the Spring and Resort collections.
Bergdorf Goodman: First off, congratulations on winning the BFC Fashion Fund! How do you think this grant and the possibilities it enables will help you grow as a designer?
Mary Katrantzou: It’s a great recognition to win the Vogue Fashion Fund, so I was honored when they announced the prize. In terms of the grant – as we are in a period of expansion, the money will help in varying areas such as key hires in senior management and working on our product and range.
BG: What was going through your mind when you heard your name as they announced the winner?
MK: It was a very happy moment. I felt grateful to be the recipient of the award and the mentorship that will help us in our strategic growth.
BG: Your collections are always so creative and delightfully unexpected, where do you garner your inspiration and what’s your process for creating your garments
MK: Inspiration can come from anywhere, and we often find that the theme of the collection will change throughout the development process. The themes themselves have become slightly more abstract than they used to be. This latest Fall Winter season, was centered around the idea of ‘Kenophobia’ vs minimalism.
BG: What would you say is the most important next step in the development of your brand?
MK: It’s about building on the brand codes that we have established already and continuing to innovate in RTW and new product categories. My work has always been about texture, form and perception and those are the pillars of the brand that we want to continue evolving. The next step will be finding a physical space to host this world and create an experience for our clients in that space and also with our current partners.
BG: What were 3 of your favorite shows (aside from your own) these past Fashion Weeks? MK: Prada, Junya Watanabe, and Valentino Shop Mary Katrantzou
