In Conversation With Amina Muaddi

Amina Muaddi is currently one of footwear’s most talented and buzzed-about stars. After growing up between Jordan, Romania and Italy, then studying at the European Institute of Design in Milan, she moved to Paris and began working with world-class artisans and suppliers. During this time, she was able to “develop an eye for what taste-makers around the world truly want.” Since then, Muaddi has co-founded shoe brand Oscar Tiye and collaborated with French couturier Alexandre Vauthier on the launch of his eponymous shoe line (which she designs to this day).

When 2018 came around, she finally decided to break out on her own. Muaddi’s designs are ones that feed the hunger for everyday glamour while staying rooted in timeless quality.  With her line now available on BG’s fifth floor and online at, we caught up with the shoe guru to discuss her inspiration, favorite styles, and more.

Bergdorf Goodman: Can you tell us why you decided to start your own footwear line and how you knew it was the right time?

Amina Muaddi: I wanted to do something that represented my evolution and my concept of modernity. After 5 years with my first brand that I started at 25 and 4 years for Alexandre Vauthier (whom I continue to work with) I felt it was the right time for a change.

Amina Muaddi is the closest project to my heart, 100% mine and 100% me. The collection is completely different, the structures, the heights, the styles and the fabrics, but not just the product, the whole branding. We also presented it differently, in a very exclusive and private way. We showed the first Fall Winter 2018/2019 collection only to ten buyers. I called it “Season 0” because the brand was presented to the public directly when it was available in stores, like a see now buy now launch of the brand.

BG: Where or at whom do you look to for inspiration when designing your collection?

AM: I get inspired by many things – my travels, people, different cultures, art, photography, objects, nature, and things outside of fashion. It’s really whatever captures my eye and senses. Each season I have a natural instinct that drives me towards a specific inspiration. I create my structures (heels and lasts) and my mood boards and then we start working on the design and fabrics. But only when I see my first prototypes do I know whether an idea is truly great or not.

BG: What is your favorite style from the BG buy and how would you wear them?

AM: I actually love the entire buy so it’s a hard choice. I think the “Begum Glass” sling back is the most special style, but at the same time so easy to wear. It’s the modern independent Cinderella shoe, so you can dress it down with jeans and a tshirt or dress it up with a cocktail dress for a party or a date with your prince.

BG: Describe the Amina Muaddi brand in 3 words.

AM: Cool, feminine, and luxurious.

BG: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Bergdorf Goodman?

AM: Dreams. BG has always been a dream shopping destination where you can spend numerous hours going through racks, shelves, objects and beauty products without even realizing how the time goes by. It’s the ultimate retail therapy.
