5 Questions: Jordana Warmflash of Novis

Clean lines, vivid colors, high impact. We are loving the Spring collection from Novis (new to 5F). Read on as we chat with designer Jordana Warmflash:

Bergdorf Goodman: What are the 3 pieces you’re most excited about from this collection?

Jordana Warmflash: The Sandisfield Cotton Blouse, the Sargent Crepe Vest and the Elm Crochet Dress. The Sandisfield is so elegantly lightweight and pairs as well with a pair of jeans as with an evening skirt — I adore its versatility. The Sargent Crepe Vest is a new take on one of our signature pieces (the Jackson Top), and I love the way the piece moves on a woman in motion; I’m very eager to see how our customers wear it. And the Elm Crochet Dress is just one of those styles where it felt like everything clicked perfectly — I love the colors, I love the silhouette and I love the velvety feel of the silk yarn on the skin.

BG: Who is your style icon and why?

JW: Iris Apfel, who I had the great pleasure of meeting last November. Her intuition and creativity are of course unparalleled, but what I love about her the most is her total confidence, in both herself and in fashion’s self-expressive powers. I have many of her incisive, cheeky quotes hanging above my desk; my favorite, a daily mantra for both me and the Novis woman, is, “I don’t dress to be stared at. I dress for myself.”

BG: Are your designs inspired by art? Who are some of your favorite artists?

JW: Yes! An artist or style of art has served as a starting point for each of our collections, influencing the palette, the aesthetic, the shapes and the emotions we aim to elicit in our customers. (Spring/Summer 2016 was inspired by Art Deco ceramicist Clarice Cliff). I’m such a sucker for modern American art — some favorite artists include Ellsworth Kelly, Donald Sultan, Jim Dine and Frank Stella.

BG: You’re running really late for date night. What’s your fail safe, go-to outfit?

JW: One of our sweaters, Acne jeans and Chloe flats. And, when it’s colder out, our Kandinsky Coat. It’s such an elevating piece! It pulls together even the most casual outfit.

BG: What are some of your favorite Instagram accounts to follow?

JW: I’m loving @socogallery for its exquisite taste, @coffeeillustrated for its whimsy, @blockshoptextiles for its great imagery of their beautiful products and @infatuation for, well, making me hungry.
