As a destination for discovery, Bergdorf Goodman is proud to announce BG RADAR, our curation of the latest and greatest collections from emerging designers across the globe, including Bernadette, Bode, Coperni, Deveaux New York, Khaite, Loulou Studio, Rotate Birger Christensen, and Sies Marjan.
In an effort to get to know the talented individuals behind these brands, we sat down with each of them ahead of the initiative’s launch to learn about the motivation behind starting their labels, how they hope to grow and evolve over time, and their favorite BG memories. Here, Sies Marjan’s Sander Lak. Read the full Q&A below and shop the collection now in store and online at BG.com.
Bergdorf Goodman: Can you talk about the motivation behind starting your brand and how you differentiate yourself from other labels today?
Sander Lak: The brand is very personal—Sies is my father’s name and Marjan is my mother’s. Everything really starts with color, and I think that’s what we’ve become known for since we debuted our first collection in 2016.
BG: Are there any signature motifs/silhouettes/pieces/design elements that you feel are unique to your label? Why?
SL: For Sies Marjan the narrative of color is essential; we explore the idea of what colors are. We really try to get fabrication design into play from the beginning, those are the most important elements. Color, fabric and fit are the three pillars of our brand.
BG: Describe the Sies Marjan customer to us and how you imagine they incorporate your pieces into their lifestyle?
SL: I don’t like to pinpoint any one type of customer. For me, it’s really about drawing inspiration from real-life people and a mentality. I like people with imperfections and people that have a story to tell. I love complicated people who live by their own rules. And ultimately, anyone that is willing to wear color can be a Sies Marjan customer.
We love when people wear a full head-to-toe Sies Marjan look, but it’s still very easy to wear a bright shirt of ours and pair it with jeans and sneakers. I love it when people play with their clothes and mix things. You can wear it as we propose, but also try things out with other clothes you have in your own closet. Experiment and have fun with it!
BG: How would you like to see your brand evolve over time? Are there any specific milestones you hope to achieve?
SL: Every new season is a benchmark of what the next thing in line will be for us. For the future, I want Sies Marjan to be a brand that still has the same energy, and its DNA to be something people can still work with.
What we are doing now is building out our categories and brand identity to make sure as many people as possible will get to know the brand. We’ve grown at a really fast pace, so it’s been hard to keep track of everything. There’s a lot of things in the pipeline, and many yet to come in 2020 that I obviously can’t talk about yet. All I can say is that we have a very exciting season ahead of us.
BG: What is your favorite/first Bergdorf Goodman memory and what does the destination mean to you?
SL: It’s hard to choose my favorite memory because I’ve been going to the store for such a long time. If I had to choose one favorite memory, it would be seeing the Sies Marjan collection at Bergdorf Goodman for the first time. That was a real milestone for the company but also a personal one. Bergdorf Goodman is an institution, so being able to sell there is a dream come true.
