As a destination for discovery, Bergdorf Goodman is proud to announce BG RADAR, our curation of the latest and greatest collections from emerging designers across the globe, including Bernadette, Bode, Coperni, Deveaux New York, Khaite, LouLou Studio, Rotate Birger Christensen, and Sies Marjan.
In an effort to get to know the talented individuals behind these brands, we sat down with each of them ahead of the initiative’s launch to learn about the motivation behind starting their labels, how they hope to grow and evolve over time, and their favorite BG memories. Here, Rotate Birger Christensen’s Thora Valdimars and Jeanette Madsen. Read the full Q&A below and shop the collection now in store and online at BG.com.
Bergdorf Goodman: Can you talk about the motivation behind starting your brand and how you differentiate yourself from other labels today?
Thora Valdimars and Jeanette Madsen: We both have kids and at the time we were working at a magazine, our influencer roles had started to take off, so we were working non stop. We had been talking about our childhood dreams and found that we shared a common goal of starting our own brand.
We made a brand because we felt it was missing in the market. We were always going to so many events and needed new dresses constantly and we felt the dresses were never short enough or sexy enough. So we actually made the brand for us and the women like us, and we think that’s the actual point of differentiation from other brands along with the price point and the fact that the dresses are extravagant yet wearable.
BG: Are there any signature motifs/silhouettes/pieces/design elements that you feel are unique to your label? Why?
TV and JM: Our sleeves are extra puffy, the lengths are extra short and our pink is extra pink. I guess we love the word extra, haha.
BG: Describe the Rotate Birger Christensen customer to us and how you imagine they incorporate your pieces into their lifestyle?
TV and JM: She likes to dress up for her man, she embraces her femininity and she likes to stand out in the crowd. She’s totally independent and is never a slave to trends. She wears Rotate with boots for work and goes all in on beautiful accessories for evening.
BG: How would you like to see your brand evolve over time? Are there any specific milestones you hope to achieve?
TV and JM: We live very much in the now, so we don’t like to plan too much ahead. We want to stay true to our original idea of keeping what we do extravagant, sexy and affordable. We have a couple of things that we’re working on but we can’t reveal them at the moment.
BG: What is your favorite/first Bergdorf Goodman memory and what does the destination mean to you?
TV and JM: Bergdorf Goodman is New York! It’s big and glorious! The first time we were in New York together, we dragged Jeanette’s husband with us and spent half a day there, and his card was bleeding on both of our behalf’s at the end of the spree. Best trip ever!
