Since being founded in Paris by a trio of friends (Benoît Verdier, Sylvie Loday, and Olivier Royère), perfume house Ex Nihilo has continuously facilitated collaborative paths between perfume creators, the latest technology and the artistic community. Their latest partnership with perfumer Quentin Bisch has resulted in an exclusive re-launch of the house’s iconic Fleur Narcotique fragrance at BG. Here, we sit down with co-founder Verdier to discuss the origins of this special collaboration, their Demi Bespoke experience, and more.
Visit our Beauty Level tonight from 6:00pm-7:30pm to meet Verdier himself and shop Ex Nihilo now in store and online at BG.com.
Bergdorf Goodman: Tell us how the partnership with French perfumer Quentin Bisch came about?
Benoit Verdier: With Quentin, it has been a long friendship since the creation of Ex Nihilo. We are from the same generation and he has been part of the Ex Nihilo family since day one. Like us, he was quite an outsider and the youngest perfumer on the team, wanting to disrupt the rules. Collaborating with him is very organic because we share a lot of common inspirations. He is the creator of our most iconic creations Fleur Narcotique and has also created Venenum Kiss and French Affair.
BG: How has the iconic Fleur Narcotique fragrance been updated exclusively for BG?
BV: It was quite tricky because we didn’t want to betray the original formula of our most iconic scent. Therefore, he had to be very cautious, going back to his original inspiration and trying to magnify what a lot of people already consider a masterpiece. White Musk has been his option of choice to bring more sophistication to the original formula, giving texture and a more enveloping feeling. He also had in mind the iconic New York woman he knows and who embodies the unique Bergdorf Goodman aesthetic.
BG: Where do you imagine women going when wearing this perfume?
BV: It’s really a versatile fragrance. You can wear it all day long for your daily activities on 5th Avenue as well as rocking it for an Opera night or a private viewing at the Whitney Museum. In any case, people will stop you and ask you what fragrance you are wearing.
We are sure that with the extra Musk added for this exclusive Bergdorf Goodman launch your sillage is going to be fabulous!
BG: Can you explain the details of the Osmologue Demi Bespoke program?
BV: First, the name Osmologue comes from an ancient Greek word meaning “science of smells.” Our ritual at Bergdorf Goodman is really an immersive experience into the core of fragrance creation. Through our exclusive technology, we mix a futuristic ritual with the best of French craftsmanship for a unique result. I would say it’s a Techno Craft approach.
You can walk in or schedule a private appointment, which I recommend. Then, our team we will work to deeply understand what the customer is looking for through an oral questionnaire.
It will be an opportunity to smell very rare absolutes of fragrances like Rose of May, Iris Pallida, and Orange Blossom in their purest form. All these combinations have been validated by our team of master perfumers here in Paris, including Quentin. Once the customer has made their choice, we proceed to the making of a juice with Osmologue, the high-tech robot we have specifically developed. Osmologue will precisely weigh and create your own composition in just a few minutes. So for the very first time, you will be able to leave with your own scent without waiting weeks to get the result.
