Bergdorf Goodman: What was the inspiration for the exclusive Bergdorf and Goodman scents?
Roja Dove: When I started traveling internationally the very first store I visited was Bergdorf Goodman. I fell in love with it, and I fell in love with the clients that come here. It’s really like no other store in the world. It was an enormous privilege to create two perfumes, one called Bergdorf and one called Goodman’s. The common denominator between the two— they have mayflowers because many people came from my land to yours on a ship with that name.
BG: Are there any special elements infused in either of the fragrances that you are particularly excited about?
RD: When creating Bergdorf and Goodman’s, I thought of the clients I meet here. When I think of Bergdorf, the women that shop here are really some of the smartest women in the world. They are very, very feminine and self-confident and for that creation I used gardenia around a lot of very soft and warm materials. For Goodman’s, I thought brisk, bright, dynamic, and self-assured, so I mixed spices and citrus materials in a bed of woods. I think both scents embody everything Bergdorf Goodman stands for.
BG: How would you describe the Roja Parfums brand in 5 words?
RD: If I were to describe Roja Parfums in 5 words, without question I would have to say luxurious, refined, uncompromising, individual and unexpected.
BG: Can you walk us through the process of creating a new scent from start to finish?
RD: I think the thing that’s interesting about creating a scent is that you have to try to imagine a smell you’ve never smelled before, then think what ingredients will end up giving you that effect. And then it’s a case of trial and error and patience. And hopefully that great idea becomes a reality.
BG: What do you find to be the most rewarding parts of your job?
RD: I think one of the most rewarding parts of my work is knowing that when somebody wears one of my scents it makes them feel even better about themselves. It makes somebody walk a centimeter taller without the need for a heel and I think that’s lovely. I also love the fact that my work becomes not only part of the wearer’s life but also part of the people’s lives around them, as it becomes part of everybody’s memories of that person. That’s an enormous privilege and something that I adore about my work.
BG: What do you find to be the most challenging parts of your job?
RD: I think one of the greatest challenges is just the speed of modern life and that very often when people come into stores they don’t always have the time to find the perfect fragrance for themselves— a quick sniff and off they go. And I think people should spend much more time to discover a scent that really reflects who they are. I’ve always said you never know, it could be a life-long love affair so it is worth spending that extra moment or two to find the perfume that’s just right for you.
