This Friday, April 27th, come meet Tibi founder and creative director Amy Smilovic on the 5th floor and customize a trench coat with your choice of special details. Ahead of the event, we asked Smilovic all things trench coat related—from her first memory of the wardrobe staple to how many she currently has in her personal collection.
Bergdorf Goodman: How did the customizable trench coat project come about?
Amy Smilovic: The perfect trench is a staple in my wardrobe. And because I wear one all the time, I found myself mixing up different components from my trenches we’ve developed over the year. It just struck me, why don’t I let the customer do the same thing? Bergdorf Goodman was of course a perfect partner to do this with.
BG: Why do you think a trench coat is a seasonal essential?
AS: It’s the ultimate in functionality—it keeps you dry, it’s light enough to be a perfect layering piece, and of course, it is just a timeless classic.
BG: What is your favorite iconic trench coat moment?
AS: Three come to mind, and they are all of equal importance to me. Meryl Streep in Kramer vs. Kramer, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and then Robert Redford in The Way We Were.
BG: What is your earliest memory of a trench coat?
AS: My first splurge after I graduated from college and was building the perfect work wardrobe that I thought would get me really taken seriously in business. I bought a navy suit, black heels, and a classic trench.
BG: How many trench coats do you personally own?
AS: Oh my, at least six or seven—and then I am constantly snagging my husband’s as well!
