A childhood love affair with art and color, and experimentation with jewelry design in college sparked Los-Angeles-based jewelry designer Irene Neuwirth to start her namesake label in 2003. In the seventeen years since, Neuwirth’s designs have become a mainstay in the fashion industry due to their whimsical sensibility and popularity amongst some of the most accomplished women in entertainment, including Naomi Watts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ruth Negga, and Sarah Paulson. We are happy to announce that Neuwirth’s collection has arrived at Bergdorf Goodman and ahead of the exciting launch we sat down with her to talk about her beginnings, the jewelry’s aesthetic, and the one piece she would wear for the rest of her life. Read the full interview below and shop Irene Neuwirth now in store in the Jewelry Salon.
Bergdorf Goodman: What inspired you to start your namesake jewelry line and how has it evolved since its beginnings in 2003?
Irene Neuwirth: I always made jewelry for fun, it was my creative outlet. I was teaching horseback riding and women would stop me on the street and ask me where I bought the pieces I had made. I decided to give it a whirl. It was definitely a leap of faith but I felt like there was something missing in the market. I wanted to create fine jewelry that allowed women to express their creativity and strength and that they felt proud to buy for themselves. I am always trying to challenge myself creatively—with color and stone choices, how to make the pieces sit just so and move more fluidly—so I obsess over details and I want the back of a piece to be just as beautiful as the front. I am the MOST proud of the most recent collection, it’s everything I want it to be and I hope you love it!
BG: How would you describe your brand’s aesthetic in three words?
IN: Bold, playful, fine!
BG: What is your favorite piece available at Bergdorf Goodman right now and how do you suggest wearing it throughout the season?
IN: It’s too hard to choose! I have so many favorites. I’ve just finished designing all these brand new sparkling one of a kinds, I’m so tremendously excited about all of them.
BG: If you could only wear one piece of jewelry from your line for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
IN: Well if you know me, you know I never take off my opal heart and opal beads.
BG: What is your favorite Bergdorf Goodman memory?
IN: I have to admit, I’m excited to make some. Come see me and the jewels!
