Artist and designer Gabo Guzzo has taken the fashion industry by storm with his handcrafted, one-of-a-kind handbags. Each bag is unique and incorporates true Italian artisanship. We caught up with Guzzo to hear more about his brand aesthetic, the design process, and what makes his handbags stand out. Read more below and see his installation in-store from March 11-April 7th.

Bergdorf Goodman: When did you decide to launch your namesake label and what was the inspiration behind it?
Gabo Guzzo: My work has always been interdisciplinary; trying to connect ideas from various fields. After an inspiring residency at my art gallery in London, I found myself thinking about merging art, design and the enlightened work of artisan hands in jewellery and fashion. I launched my label in 2017 with a belief that a focus on more art and less production will make for a better future for our planet and mankind. My handbags are collectable, one-of-a-kind pieces, created to be enjoyed over the years.

BG: How would you describe the Gabo Guzzo aesthetic in three words?
GG: Cross-pollinated, uncompromising, timeless.

BG: Can you tell us about the design process? Where do you source inspiration?
GG: The creative research draws on my own artistic practice as well as jewelry and traditional Italian artisanship. I engage in collaborations with other artists and designers; even botanists, biologists or architects depending on the specific design project. The handbags are then handcrafted by master leather-good artisans and goldsmiths in Italy.

BG: What do you think separates your brand from other handbag brands?
GG: Our handbags are always one-of-a-kind and meticulously handcrafted; created in a slow process that allows time to perfect them. They are available in very limited quantities. Thanks to this approach, each handbag becomes a very personal item and tells the story of its wearer.

BG: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Bergdorf Goodman? Can you tell us more about the installation in store?
GG: Outstanding curation. The installation consists of three giant golden terrariums. The work draws on the tension between humans and nature. It will be on display in the windows from March 11th until April 7th.
