A great leather jacket is like a close friend—the right one can be hard to find, but when you do you keep it very close to you. We think designer Daniela Cassab, who founded her eponymous label in 2016, would agree, as she recently told BG, “A leather jacket is one of the most versatile staples of clothing you can have in your closet. It’s an item that grows with you and gets better with age.”
If you have yet to find your perfect leather jacket, Cassab has created a whole range of options to choose from—including the suede and studded Love jacket to the fringed and leather Loretta, which was spotted all over the street style circuit. Read more about the designer and the inspiration behind her brand’s launch, and shop the collection now in store on 5 and below on BG.com.
Bergdorf Goodman: What inspired you to start your label?
Daniela Cassab: I started off in the industry working at Elle Mexico in several roles, which led to independent styling and eventually brought opportunities to design custom pieces for artists like J. Balvin, Shakira, and Maluma. I founded Dan Cassab out of a desire to foster the design traditions and empower local communities of Mexico by bringing exceptional leather craftsmanship to the world. Studying art history also allowed me to really appreciate the storytelling element of a garment, so many pieces that you’ll see in my collections are inspired by Mexico. It’s great to live in a country that nurtures opportunities to create because there’s a lot that can be drawn from our history and culture.
BG: Has outerwear always been a passion of yours? Why?
DC: I’ve always loved how outerwear can pull together an entire outfit and make a statement. To me, a leather jacket is one of the most versatile staples of clothing you can have in your closet. It’s an item that grows with you and gets better with age. I grew up in a family that worked in the garment business, so I was already familiarized with textiles; it’s in my DNA. Working with leather is a particular skill that once I learned it, I fell in love with the process. All of our jackets are handmade by artisans in Mexico and you can feel the difference in our craftsmanship—each piece exemplifies our luxury heritage.
BG: How would you describe the Dan Cassab label in three words?
DC: Dan Cassab is luxury, handcrafted, and timeless design.
BG: What is your favorite piece available at BG and why?
DC: The jackets available at BG all have a different purpose so I love them all, but if I had to choose one, the blue Loretta with the wonderful fringe is just so special. It’s truly a head-turning piece.
BG: What is your favorite Bergdorf Goodman memory?
BG: My first memories of BG started when I was a little girl going in and smelling the glamour in the air of the store—especially during the holiday season. Then as a student at Parsons School of Design in NY, I spent many happy moments at BG researching collections and becoming inspired by the work of designers from all over the world.
