Live Window Revue: Meet Lypsinka
Lypsinka! Legendary mistress of lip-synching dramatics.
This Fashion’s Night Out Lypsinka will step into our windows and give Fifth Avenue a performance unlike ever before!
BG: Is this your first time performing in a store window?
Lypsinka: Yes, I believe it is. I remember going to a party in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1977 and the party was at an abandoned shoe store called The Shoe Queen. So the party was called The Shoe Queen Party. The spread was in the store windows, and it’s possible that I made it in the window that night… but you can’t really call that a performance. It was merely a folly.
BG: Do you have a memorable on-stage blunder?
L: The first time I ever saw someone asleep in my audience. I was so stunned I forgot to lip-synch a few of my lines.
BG: Favorite costume that you’ve seen?
L: The first thing that pops into my mind of costumes I’ve seen is the famous ‘nude’ dress that Jean Louis made for Marlene Dietrich’s many concert appearances.
BG: And that you’ve worn?
L: The first thing I think of is the costume made for Thierry Mugler’s fashion show in 1991. It is… a museum piece.
BG: So here’s a question we like to ask our designers: what’s your worst childhood fashion memory?
L: When I was a little boy (yes, believe it or not, Lypsinka was a little boy), I hated wearing pants because they scratched the insides of my thighs. I was an overly sensitive little boy!
BG: Any guilty pleasures you want to share with us?
L: Watching old, bad movies.
BG: And do you have a BG Story?
L: This isn’t about me exactly, but I enjoyed reading John Carlyle’s book Under the Rainbow. It tells of when he worked as an information-giver at one of the entrances to Bergdorf Goodman, and it was the first time he saw Judy Garland in the flesh, offstage. Garland was coming into the store and he recognized her laugh before he spotted her. They later became great friends.
