On Fifth Avenue: Eclectic Eccentric

Featuring our August windows, photographed by Julia Chesky

8 6 2010

Last week, our Fifth Avenue windows reopened and unveiled a survey of the work of illustrator John Rombola, celebrating the recently published book, John Rombola, Eclectic Eccentric.

Rediscovered by a new generation of art and design lovers, John Rombola’s rambunctious illustrations have been published from the 1950s to present.  His drawings are reminiscent of Saul Steinberg, Ben Shahn and early Warhol… but with a flair that is Rombola’s own.

The windows exhibit a large number of Rombola’s illustrations – including his witty spin on society women; his vibrant New York City skylines; and his lush illustrations of his travels to carnivals, to Venice and to imagined places.  In addition, our Visual Department created sculptural interpretations inspired by Rombola’s line drawings and mixed them with a selection of richly colored and patterned looks from our Fall 2010 Collections.
