Out & About: Waldemarstrasse on 53rd

Berlin Wall, 53rd St.

More than two-decades after the Berlin Wall collapsed and crumbled into history and its lesson books, pieces of it remain scattered across the globe reminding its passersby of how fickle the world can be.  Three segments of the Wall reside in New York City, and one of them happens to be just a few paces from our corner on Fifth Avenue.  Originally located on Waldemarstrasse, this portion now finds itself on the north side of 53rd street between Madison and Fifth Avenues and features the art of Thierry Noir and Kiddy Citny.  While a bit unexpected, this quiet shady spot is a lovely place to sit, read a book and consider how swiftly the world can change.

Getting there:
Walk down Fifth Avenue and take a left on 53rd Street.  Stay on the north side of the street.  The space is half-way between Fifth and Madison Avenues.

Grammercy Park Hotel Central Park The Lion

Now that I’m a mom, I can look forward to more than just shopping in the city. This fall, I am most excited for walks in Central Park with my son, Skyler – the perfect excuse to rock the Gretta wrap collar coat and Rachel bootcut jean from my collection. It’s the ultimate casual yet chic ensemble – wear it to the Park or the Plaza – the look is both fashionable and functional. It doesn’t get better than that! View More

Nothing is more distinctly New York City than its signature hustle and bustle…after all, it is the city that never sleeps.  But every now and then the New Yorker in all of us needs a break, a time to feel refreshed, rejuvenated and replenished. Fortunately, we have found the perfect escape – and it comes in the form of a neighboring island. Out & About: L’Amour Fou at the Paris

Discovering New York City Secrets

5 20 2011

None of us can deny Yves Saint Laurent’s influence.  Particularly this season with everyone abuzz about the YSL-effect — the resurgence after his passing of those signature color combinations, a revival of his visions of boho-deluxe and soigné safari, and a timely return to his chic play on the tuxedo adapted for women, Le Smoking.

With his iconic footprint in mind this rainy weekend, we’re taking our own footsteps next door to the beloved Paris Theater to watch Pierre Thoretton’s elegantly constructed story about the designer.  L’Amour Fou, the new poignant documentary film about the special relationship, life and personal collections of Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé. It’s playing , fortunately for us, next door at The Paris Theatre, from May 13th and running through the first week of June.

It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to join a mishmash of big thinkers and shakers. However, thanks to the New Museum and their creative collaborators, downtown this week is a colorful Festival of Ideas. Including symposia, lectures and workshops, this four-day jubilee includes conferences with David Byrne, Joseph Grima, Elizabeth Diller, Frank Duffy and more. The Bowery also will host a StreetFest filled with innovative grassroots organizations and small businesses — rain or shine (so bring your umbrella).

Hope to see you downtown.
