I’m a Good Man : Brandon Johnson
A Goodman Writes His Own Ending
5th/58th gets to know one of the faces of our new Goodman campaign, magazine editor Brandon Johnson.
5th/58th: Where were you born?
BJ: Rock Island, Illinois.
5th/58th: When did you arrive in New York?
BJ: 7 years ago.
5th/58th: Why did you choose to live here?
BJ: Culture. I moved here to be a poet.
5th/58th: What do you love most about the City?
BJ: Great mix of the old and new. Great variety and character.
5th/58th: What is your occupation?
BJ: Managing Editor of an art publication, Zing Magazine and Studio Manager for an artist and art collector.
5th/58th: Describe your job.
BJ: I wear many hats, overseeing all aspects of the magazine’s operations as well as the Publisher’s art practice. I manage schedules, contribute to editorial in the magazine, oversee the handling, installation and cataloging of valuable sculptures, paintings and photographs.
5th/58th: Describe your industry.
BJ: The art world is too big of an animal to summarize in this small space. But there are many parallels to what I love about the industry and what I love about the City: variety and character. And it’s always changing. New York City and the art world are not the best fit for people that dislike change.
5th/58th: How do you define success?
BJ: My success in life will always be related to personal fulfillment in the ways I spend my time – in work and free time.
5th/58th: Any notable stories that helped define your career, work ethic or life direction?
BJ: My first year [here] was spent working 3 jobs to get by: starting at a law firm in the early morning, then working at a restaurant at night. And freelancing for the magazine on my days off. It was exhausting, but committing to freelance work at the magazine on my days off led to a full-time position at the magazine and exposure to all facets of the art world.
5th/58th: Describe your “uniform.”
BJ: Black brogues, black jeans, black or patterned button up shirts – both short and long sleeves.
5th/58th: Do you own a suit?
BJ: Yes, I own one suit that I wear to special events and weddings.
5th/58th: What is your favorite thing to wear?
BJ: I do enjoy dressing up in my suit, but I prefer a pulled-together casual look. I recently bought a black guayabera that has become a staple for Summer.
5th/58th: What will you never wear?
BJ: Neon colors.
