Gentleman Caller
A suit worth coveting
Now that Giorgio Armani is one of the wise men in fashion, it’s hard to remember that he once represented a sense of dangerous style. Look no further than the legendary wardrobe he designed for Richard Gere in the film “American Gigolo”. The look–outsized double breasted suits, close-set buttons, muted palette–perfectly matched the protagonist’s ascension in the world. He was going places, succeeding on his own terms.
The film’s style became an instant classic–and Armani pays homage to that era in the exclusive suit he designed for BG’s 111th Anniversary. What’s striking is that what looked daring in the 80s now registers as timeless. That’s the foresight that makes Armani a singular designer. And that’s why the suit is well worth coveting.
David Coggins, who considers closets in this issue, hopes his orderly wardrobe will translate into a tranquil life. His work has appeared in Esquire, Art in America and the Wall Street Journal, among other publications. He lives in New York.
