Designer Spotlight: 10 Years of visvim
People who fall for visvim fall hard. They track the movements and inspiration of Hiroki Nakamura, the design maestro and genuinely fantastic gentleman who oversees the visvim mojo. He’s based in Tokyo, but spends time in New York and his sensibility is expansive, surprising and always irreverent. It’s been 10 years of visvim and the Spring/Summer collection is full of the sense of invention and individuality that will give the faithful reason to celebrate.
Genre defying shoes are a visvim staple. The “Hockney” is a favorite, it’s an interpretation of the classic boat shoe. Another highlight is a suede varsity jacket (below) which gives a luxurious feel to an American classic.
Nakamura loves to combine patterns and fabrics and unexpected details. A white oxford shirt comes with blue elbow patches will get attention. A cotton/linen indigo sport coat has a terrific lived-in look, while a striped t-shirt has a clean seaside feel. There are a lot of updates on American sportswear, but is case you think there’s not enough of the Tokyo side of the ledger, look no further than a short, striped kimono. Wear it with a pair of jeans and you understand the visvim theory: everything is in play for the true individual. — DC
