One of the few female designers on the British menswear scene, Lou Dalton has become known for her innate understanding of what men want when it comes to clothes. After studying menswear at the Royal College of Art, Dalton worked at United Arrows, Iceberg and Stone Island in Italy, before launching her namesake label in 2005. Just after her Fall 2019 menswear show in London, we caught up with the designer to talk about the inspiration behind the latest collection, new innovations, and more. Read the story below and shop the label in store now on 3.
Bergdorf Goodman: What was the inspiration for your latest collection?
Lou Dalton: There has always been a narrative of sorts surrounding the collections to date and this time around I was heavily inspired by the Azebaijani artist Tahir Salahov and his “severe style” of work. With its sparing palette of contrasting vibrant and muted tones originally used to accurately portray life in the Soviet 1960’s, this season was also very much about celebrating the men in my life, those that have supported, mentored and worn the collection to date.
BG: What elements can we expect to find in the collection?
LD: Utilitarian silhouettes, fine gauge striped merino wool polo’s, distressed Fair Isle lambswool knits, wool melton checked outerwear, and layers and layers of texture.
BG: Are there any new innovations or elements in the collection that you are particularly excited about?
LD: I am incredibly proud of the ongoing collaboration with John Smedley Knitwear, which seems to go from strength to strength season after season. I am also incredibly excited by the introduction of the Lou Dalton x Gloverall manufacturing collaboration, which has allowed us to develop great quality outerwear at an affordable price.
BG: How would you describe the Lou Dalton aesthetic in three words?
LD: Durable, functional and desirable.
BG: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Goodman’s?
LD: A considered selection of product, a clear understanding of who the client is and their retail needs. A great retail presence and experience.
