Note: When we first selected The Rockaways for this shoot, it was a sunny day in August and Hurricane Sandy wasn’t even a blip on the radar. We’ve been fascinated by its growing surf community and beachside charm and sought to capture the neighborhood and its spirit through photographer Angelo Pennetta’s lens. So inspired by the setting, we asked surf photographer Zak Bush to contribute a separate post about surfing the Rockaways. And then came Sandy. Since Hurricane Sandy, Bush has tirelessly dedicated his time to cleaning up a neighborhood, he also took his camera.
