Here and Now: Things For Your Spring Fling

ARTISTS OF FASHION
Our advanced designer gallery has grown, with three collections opening this spring. Holly Fowler is a fresh young London-based designer who combines couture dressmaking with virtuoso painting. Each of her sleek hand-painted gowns is one-of-a-kind, representing hundreds of hours of work. Fowler designs have the graphic impact of pop art but with a romantic beauty reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelite: exquisite dresses for up-to-date princesses.
Holly Fowler answers our 5 QuestionsSally LaPointe’s designs are also art-inspired, exhibiting a rigorous conceptual approach that sources architecture, literature and photography. Her clothes are all about subtle but seductive shapes. You might not suspect that the sexy SS13 collection was inspired by a Black Sea submarine base, but LaPointe seizes on whatever it takes to create a sensuous line that highlights the body.

He launched his own line of sculptural, futurist clothing three years ago. Already, he is one of the leaders of the European fashion avant-garde, breaking boundaries with daring ideas and innovative craftsmanship.

NO SQUARE FOOT
Our latest in designer shoes is Aquazzura, created by the elegant Colombian-born designer Edgardo Osorio, who has designed footwear for Salvatore Ferragamo, Sigerson Morrison and Roberto Cavalli among others. His own sleek and luxurious shoes are made in Florence to the highest standards.
Three debuts at 5F shoes: Ancient Greek Sandals are exactly that: footwear for timeless goddesses. Made in Greece by traditional artisans, their latest offerings include a collaboration between founder Christina Martini and Greek designer Marios Schwab. Still classical, but rather Helen of Troy meets Pocahontas—a delightful tribal fusion. Isa Tapia makes fun, colorful and feminine shoes that scamper all over Manhattan, brightening up outfits and making days. Pour La Victoire makes delightful Parisian-inspired shoes that deliver high style without a bankrupting price tag.

ARE YOU READY TO WEAR THIS RTW?
Three additions on 5F put our ready-to-wear over the top in the cool and current department. Les Chiffoniers is a London label that makes that town rock. Leena Similu, former head designer for Jil and for Stella, made her own name with PVC leggings. Today, she’s doing sophisticated shapes, but with colors and twists that define edgy for now. Margaret Maldonado conquered show business as a top artists’ agent but became an artist in her own right with L’Agence, making wearable wardrobe staples in the best materials: washed silks and Japanese and Italian fabrics. Like her talent company, her fashion line has something for everyone. One intriguing collaboration is that of Serge Azria of Current/Elliott and Mary Katrantzou. The denim master meets the princess of prints. The result is dazzling and as fast forward in style as you can get.

SCATTER MY ASHES AT BERGDORF’S
Look forward to the new documentary, Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s. Director Matthew Miele’s film features venerable New Yorkers, fashion personalities and designers who describe their connection to BG. Karl Lagerfeld, Jason Wu, Oscar de la Renta, Wes Gordon and Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen make appearances, along with other glittering figures. Get a backstage look into the preparation of the legendary holiday windows—a year in the making. You will not forget Betty Halbreich, BG’s personal shopper extraordinaire, an institution in her own right, who dresses powerful names in fashion, politics and entertainment. It’s an intimate look inside the walls of a store unlike any other.

BRAND NEW BAG BRANDS
We added exciting new lines to our 5F handbag collection. Elena Ghisellini designs Givenchy’s handbags as well as her own eponymous line, a wide-ranging array to suit every mood and purpose, designed at her studio in Florence and exquisitely made at a laboratory nearby. McQ’s creative director Sarah Burton offers bags that express the unique modern elegance of Alexander McQueen’s vision. Clare Vivier once worked in television, and she could never find a bag to stylishly accommodate her laptop. That got her started, and she never looked back. Today, her self-named line offers a broad range of bags that are both chic and utilitarian, mirroring her own life with their Parisian chic and L.A. cool. Hunting Season’s designer Danielle Corona knows her skins. She works only in the most exotic and luxurious hides from the world’s most eminent tanners, fabricating her bags with craftsmanship and handmade Italian hardware.
