BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS

Peter Pilotto, 212 872 8747Erdem, 212 872 2670

In 2008 Peter Pilotto teamed with school chum Christopher De Vos to found the house Peter Pilotto. In 2009 they were named Best Emerging Talent at the British Fashion Awards. Each Pilotto garment is made with textiles designed and engineered specifically for it. The shapes are sculpted, the fabrics strikingly forward. Erdem, by the young Canadian Erdem Moralioglu, boldly transports smart florals into a third millennium chic and uses the finest laces to fashion sexily feminine dresses.

BALMAIN ENCORE, BALMAIN TOUJOURS

Pierre Balmain, 212 872 2843Pierre Balmain, 212 872 2843Since its foundation in 1945 by Pierre Balmain, the legendary house has been synonymous with Parisienne chic, but ironically, Balmain has gotten younger lately, mixing its iconic verve with a rock-and-roll sensibility. The new Pierre Balmain line has a fiercely sophisticated, haute rocker attitude.

SHOES NEWS

5F Shoes, 212 872 8941Charles Philip makes the chicest new slipper shoe. A Milanese living in Shanghai, he hired a Chinese cobbler to make them with fine shirtings. That cobbler became an army, turning out shoes smart as English slippers, hipper than ballet slippers and comfy as Moroccan babushes. A century ago Superga pioneered rubber-soled shoes in Turin; now Superga is Italian for sneakers. They’re collaborating with The Row’s designers Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen on a series of supremely crafted, classic kicks. New Yorker Gabriela Lanardonne fell in love with alpargatas, the stylish Argentine espadrilles, but she wanted them better made, so she reinvented the folk flat as the streamlined MYMU, made with the best materials.

MIXED-MEDIA MEN

Men's, 212 339 3343

Kitsuné is the duo of Goldas Loaëc, Daft Punk’s art director/manager, and Masaya Kuroki, a Tokyo architect turned fashion designer. Kuroki’s focus on structural foundation and details accounts for Kitsuné’s classicism and collaborations with such brands as A.P.C., Pierre Hardy, J.M. Weston and Mackintosh. Michael Bastian, the 2011 CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year, is back. After studying James Dean movies, he has channeled what Dean would be wearing for Spring/Summer ’12.

CHARMING JEWELS

Annina Vogel, 212 872 2518Annina Vogel grew up surrounded by the exquisite antique jewels her mother sold, and as a Brit kid in bohemian San Francisco she began making her own gold charms as a hobby. Demand from her friends, many of them famous, interrupted her TV career, and the rest is charming history.

A HOUSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR

Dec Home, 212 872 8872Belinda Carlisle, who sang lead in the Go-Go’s, has lived in the South of France and India, where her talent for design bloomed into a line of fantastically colorful home accessories. Belindia is ours exclusively. Swiss-born, England-educated Daniel Oates opened his sculpture studio in New York and showed with the prestigious 303 Gallery. Eventually, Oates branched out into toys and marionettes and then on to sculptural furniture. Inspired by nature like George Nakashima, he creates unique pieces with forms inspired by the materials. His work is in major collections, and his “Night Table” was recently acquired by the Whitney Museum.
