Notes from the Runway
I try to abstain from over-used superlatives, but sometimes the moment really warrants it, and that moment is now! Fall is absolutely, utterly ultra-gorgeous! Unabashed glamour prevails. Even the younger designers presented us with collections with a truly dressed-up, pulled-together attitude. Runway-side we bantered around concepts like Lady Chic, Polished and Pulled Together, the style of dressing where every detail really matters. Be forewarned, it’s a season of fabrics, materials and colors that are irresistible—gemstone, fox, sumptuous leathers, lace, python and velvet! Everywhere you look, it’s rich, refined and delicious!
We are brimming with pride as we unveil new boutiques for Tom Ford, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and Armani, as well as our newly expanded and sumptuous Shoe Salon that will satisfy even the most insatiable foot fetishes.
Other news: Joseph Altuzarra is a hot new name to watch and makes his home on our Designer Third Floor. Our contemporary world is abuzz with new names like Carven, Kelly Wearstler, A.L.C. and Rachel Zoe—all worth a look-see.
If I sound over excited, it’s because, frankly, I am! Enjoy!
The most pervasive and persuasive message of the season is high glamour. It’s a transcontinental trend, enthusiastically promoted by established and emerging designers alike. It’s a sea change, so get on board early.
There’s a modernist take on the glamorous 1940’s femme—think chic red lips, lustrous neat hair, fedoras, classic gloves and stockings, belted slim skirt suits, Bacall trousers, and lots of luxe. This is ensemble style, ladylike and definitely dressed up. The sheath is back alongside clever new takes on suit dressing; with the prettiest blouses, perfect to top those elongated slim skirts and high-waisted trousers.
Leave the luggage at home and complete the look with a smart, refined handbag—we favor the new semi-structured top handles or retro-glam clutch envelopes.
There are coats for all reasons and all seasons. We have never seen such a
compelling range of silhouettes, materials and styles.
Your coat has finally and definitely moved beyond function to full-on fashion. Coats no longer need the excuse of cold weather to come out of the closet.
Outerwear is a great investment because it does triple duty—useful, stylish and without an expiration date. We think this season is the perfect one to build a true wardrobe.
Style news? Elongated capes, lengthy maxis, coats non-neutral in full-on color! Sporty anoraks and bombers over dressy looks, cropped chubby furs, and clean polished topcoats. Ladies, it’s cold outside. Or it will be soon!
Fur is for fun! We have never seen a season with so many brilliant and unexpected ways to wear it. Collections without it are the exception, not the rule.
We have a weakness for fox in glorious gemstone colors, and we’re crazy for the eccentricities of mixed-media fur, because they’re all marvelous.
Watch for striking, new applications of fur as a detail, streaking graphically down a sleeve or boldly encircling an extra-wide hem.
The Other “L” Words
One of the reasons the season is so glamorous is all the beautiful, LUXURIOUS materials. Fabrics that thrill the hand and the eye.
Nothing conveys femininity more than LACE. Whether Chantilly, Swiss or laser cut and appliquéd, one is prettier than the next.
We have never seen LEATHER more beautifully handled. Technology, tradition and craftsmanship have collaborated to give us skins as thin, soft and supple as a lightweight fabric, yet so much more exciting. We love entire dresses and skirts in this delectable material.
Let’s talk about LENGTH. We’re keener on “longer is leaner.” We’re not laying down the law but suggesting viable new options.
Every season brings out a new shining star fabric— this time it’s the sexy luxe of LUREX®.
In Living Color
While black, navy and neutral will always be winter staples, the excitement now is in strong colors to enliven the drab gray days.
It’s time to break out of your comfort zone and pull on something vivid and vivacious.
You will be surprised at how lively you feel and how well the world responds. Energy begets energy, and this is the action end of the color spectrum.
Collect gemstones! Rubies, sapphires, emeralds!
We love rich colors stacked, blocked and layered, although one at a time is a great
It’s days of wine and roses again. Drink up the delicious colors we saw in Pre-Fall. Then they were an aperitif. Now they’re a main course, richer and fuller. Nothing is more intoxicating now than cabernet, claret, bordeaux and burgundy.
